Who We Are: From its founding in 1987 by congressional staff performing American choral works on Capitol Hill, the Congressional Chorus has grown into a family of choruses – over 180 singers – who perform a full concert season and educate singers from ages 8 to 96 in several areas of the city.

·        The Congressional Chorus performs a wide range of American music, including blues, jazz, contemporary classical, folksongs, spirituals, Broadway hits, and popular standards, along with world premiere commissioned works supporting local D.C. artists. Over half of choristers are current or former Capitol Hill staffers, including several founding members. The Chorus features Chamber and dance ensembles and soloists who perform in concerts and at private and community events.

·        The American Youth Chorus (AYC) is a two-division chorus of singers ages 8 to 14, providing students with an enjoyable and supportive curriculum that develops stage presence and teamwork through performances. AYC rehearses at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW), and offers sliding scale tuition based on household income as well as scholarships.

·        The NorthEast Senior Singers (NESS) is a free weekly organized chorus, encouraging healthy aging, peer fellowship, and community service for Washington’s older citizens. Rehearsals take place at the Delta Towers assisted living facility in Northeast DC. NESS remains one of the only programs in DC supporting senior singers to perform alongside a community of younger peers.

Our singers have performed at two presidential inaugurations, the White House, U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, State Department, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Memorial, Union Station, National Building Museum, Nationals Park, at private events, community events, senior centers and schools. The choruses have appeared on NBC, CNN and C-SPAN and have collaborated with local dance and instrumental groups, a cappella vocalists, actors, and poets. The chorus has commissioned seven original works by contemporary American composers and has received grants and awards from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, Capitol Hill Community Foundation, Philip L. Graham Fund, and others. The chorus’s scholarship funds support singers across our family of choruses.
